Who's playing
Every client says hello to us every five minutes. Nobody has to be logged in and nobody types anything — the game signs the hello with a key it made the first time it ran, and the numbers below are counted from the hellos that checked out.

What is actually counted
The hello carries three things: that this installation exists, which build it is, and whether it is Windows, macOS or Linux. It carries no names, no addresses you can read here, and no numbers — the client cannot tell us how many players there are, because it never sends a count. Everything on this page is worked out on our side from arrivals we could verify.
Keys are free to make, so a signature alone would not stop somebody inventing ten thousand players. New keys arriving in a crowd from one address stop being counted after the first handful. They are not turned away — they simply do not appear above.
